child playing in an organized playroom

Kids Room Organization Ideas

A kid's room should be a place filled with fun and happiness. While other rooms in your home are likely centered around adult preferences and activities, children's bedrooms and playrooms should be designed to meet the needs of their youthful inhabitants. But keeping your kids’ rooms organized may prove to be a challenge, especially when toys seem to multiply overnight.

Designing a practical kid's room is the key to making it as comfy and playful as possible. Here's what you need to know to create the ultimate kid's room that prioritizes space and, most importantly, fun.

Store Like Items Together

When your child goes to play in their room, they should be able to find the toy they're looking for quickly, access it easily, and know where to place it when it's time to clean up. To make all of these things possible and easy, it's helpful to store like items together. Rather than throwing stuffed animals, blocks, and puzzles in one large toy box, bring in bins, baskets, and shelves. Then you can separate different types of toys.

For instance, keep the Legos in one storage bin and the Hot Wheels cars in another. Be sure to choose clear bins with lids whenever possible. When your little one wants to play with their blocks or toy cars, they can grab the designated bin, then toss them all back in it later.

Choose Multi-Purpose Furniture

If your child's playroom is small, that’s no problem. Incorporating dual-purpose furnishings is a great way to make the most of any space, big or small. One option that would add to the style and comfort of virtually any playroom is a seating area with built-in storage. This could be a wooden bench with cubby holes.

Your child will have a comfortable place to hang out. They'll also have additional storage to keep things out of sight when they're not using them.

Use Vertical Space to Keep Kids’ Rooms Organized

Children need room to use their imaginations and spread out in their playroom. With this in mind, it's a good idea to maximize the floor space in the room as much as possible. To ensure that they're not bumping into unnecessary furniture or decor, consider using the room's vertical space to keep the floor clutter-free.

Remember, when displaying storage or toys on the walls, such as with chalkboards or bookshelves, hang them low enough for your little one to reach them safely.

One In, One Out

Let's face it; it's impossible to keep your kids’ rooms organized if they're constantly accumulating more stuff. So prevent their bedroom or playroom from being overwhelmed by too many things; consider adopting the "one in, one out" rule.

Every time your child brings another toy home, it's time to let an old one go. Whether they give them away to a friend, sell them, or donate them, parting with old toys as you collect new ones is a great way to be mindful. The practice can also help your little ones appreciate their belongings and use the items that are in their playroom.

Create a Hidden Playroom

Even the most organized playroom can get messy and chaotic from time to time. This is especially true when several kids are using the space to its fullest potential. Providing a lively playroom for the kids in your home is certainly a good thing. But it is probably not what you want to see when guests stop by.

Creating a hidden playroom with a customized door from Murphy Door is a wonderful way to give your child the space they need to play freely without taking away from your home's beauty and comfort.
