FAQ

What types of locks work with a Murphy Door® hidden door?

Murphy Door® hidden doors are compatible with deadbolts, magnetic electromagnetic locks, RFID keycard readers, biometric fingerprint locks, wireless keypads, and smart home integrated access systems. Lock selection depends on whether access is needed from one side (exterior-only) or both sides, whether electronic or mechanical backup is preferred, and what smart home platform you use. Murphy Door®'s hardware team can advise on the right lock system for any security and access requirement.

What is an electromagnetic lock and how does it work with a hidden door?

An electromagnetic (mag) lock uses electrical current to generate a magnetic field that bonds a steel armature plate on the door to the electromagnet on the frame — holding the door closed with force typically measured in hundreds to thousands of pounds of holding strength. When power is cut (via keypad, RFID, remote, or smart home command), the magnetic field collapses and the door releases. Murphy Door® integrates mag locks within door frames with no visible hardware on the bookcase face, maintaining full concealment.

Can I add a lock to my hidden door?

Yes. Murphy Door® hidden doors are compatible with a range of locking systems including deadbolts, magnetic (electromagnetic) locks, RFID keycard systems, biometric fingerprint readers, wireless keypads, and smart home integration. Lock options depend on door configuration and whether you need access from one or both sides. Browse locking hardware in the accessories collection or speak with a Murphy Door® specialist to design the right access control system.

Should I use a magnetic lock or a deadbolt for a safe room door?

For a safe room, a multi-point mechanical deadbolt system is the more reliable primary locking mechanism because it operates without electricity and cannot be defeated by cutting power to the building. Magnetic (electromagnetic) locks are excellent as secondary access-control layers — they enable keypad or RFID entry from outside the room — but they fail open when power is lost, making them unsuitable as the sole locking mechanism in an emergency scenario. Murphy Door's safe room doors are engineered with mechanical multi-point deadbolts as the primary system, with provisions for electronic secondary locks integrated at your option. Our design team can walk you through the full access-control stack for your project.
