FAQ
What is a hidden bookcase door?
A hidden bookcase door is a fully functional door engineered to look exactly like a built-in bookcase when closed. Murphy Door® units use precision hinges, flush-mount framing, and matched trim so the door disappears into the wall. When opened, it reveals a concealed room, safe space, or private passage. Murphy Door has shipped 200,000+ products and invented the modern category.
What is the difference between a flush-mount and surface-mount hidden door?
A flush-mount hidden door installs within the wall opening so the door face sits perfectly level with the surrounding wall, creating a completely seamless look. A surface-mount door attaches to the wall face with a frame and trim, sitting slightly proud of the wall. Flush-mount installs are more architecturally convincing but require more precise rough opening preparation. Surface-mount is faster to install and works with most wall types.
Is it hard to install a hidden bookcase door?
Installation difficulty depends on your configuration. Murphy Door® panel kits are designed for experienced DIYers with basic carpentry skills and can typically be completed in one to two days. Fully assembled units ship pre-hung and factory-tested, so they install faster. White Glove Delivery (an optional add-on from $350) will bring the unit inside and place it in the room, but it does not include installation. For flush-mount or custom configurations, professional installation is strongly recommended to ensure proper alignment and concealment — Murphy Door offers it through a network of licensed contractors in select cities; call 888-458-5911 to check coverage and get a quote.
How much force does it take to open and close a Murphy Door?
Very little — a slight pull is all it takes. Despite weighing 80 to 100 lbs, the door is balanced by our patented hinge system so it swings open and closed with minimal effort. Most people are surprised by how effortless it feels in person.
What sizes do Murphy Door bookcase doors come in?
Murphy Door bookcase doors are available in widths from 24" to 84" to fit virtually any standard or custom doorway opening. Standard heights follow typical residential door heights. Custom sizes are also available for non-standard openings — contact our team for sizing guidance if your opening falls outside standard ranges.
Are Murphy Door® hidden doors suitable for DIY installation?
Yes, Murphy Door offers DIY kits along with detailed instruction manuals, support videos, and flush mount installation guides.

Good concept, subpar quality of the 'book'
The original Hidden Door Book Latch included a very nice 'book' which not only looked like an actual book, they had a hidden compartment inside. Their vendor went out of business and now the versions of the 'books' they are currently shipping are exceptionally cheap products [note that the hardware is good]. These versions are little more than just a block of wood; they do not look like a book anyone would have on their bookshelf at all; they do not have the hidden compartment; and they are not up to the caliber of the other Murphy Door products. The concept is great, but the included 'book' is remarkable cheap and poorly executed.

The door latch book didn’t fit the bookcase door
The door latch book didn’t fit the bookcase door I ordered from you. And no one has responded back on what can be done.

Bad Customer Service
I can't rate the hidden door book latch. It is not installed because I ordered it by mistake while trying to order something else. I requested information about how to return it and got no response for a few days. Finally I received a message asking if I had opened the package and.was I aware of the 25% restocking fee. Apparently, if the package has been opened even 25% of the package price isn't enough for someone else to review the tiny plastic bag and seal it shut. I just lost $175. You just potential future customers

Disappointed with the Book Latch
The book latch is a cool idea but needs to be better executed. I installed the door and book latch a year ago. The door has been great, though over time it is starting to sag out of square. But over all we are happy with the door.
The book is all press and fiber construction making the material soft. It has a thin frame made to look like the page edges. The screws have lost bite in the fiber material and the tension of the wire pulls the book in toward the frame which causes it to bind with the overhung face frame. I don’t see a reason not to make the book with a solid core. The hinge pin could be extended through a pre drilled hole improving the stability of the whole system.

Hidden Door
Overall, I’m happy with Murphy Door. The sales team was a bit pushy, but it wasn’t an issue since I already knew what I wanted. My only complaint is the lack of clear installation instructions—be prepared to do some searching online to figure things out.

Before You Install: Finish Those Walls First
Surface Mount sits over a fully finished opening: drywall,
paint, and trim done, just like an existing doorway. If
you’re still mid-construction, finish those edges out
first, or the raw sheetrock and framing around the door will
stay visible once it’s mounted.
