This Paint Grade option is built with a smooth, paintable MDF face and solid hardwood face frames, primed and ready for your choice of paint or finish, with the dimensional stability MDF provides over solid wood.

What is a hidden bookcase door?
A hidden bookcase door is a fully functional door engineered to look exactly like a built-in bookcase when closed. Murphy Door® units use precision hinges, flush-mount framing, and matched trim so the door disappears into the wall. When opened, it reveals a concealed room, safe space, or private passage. Murphy Door has shipped 200,000+ products and invented the modern category.
What is the difference between a flush-mount and surface-mount hidden door?
A flush-mount hidden door installs within the wall opening so the door face sits perfectly level with the surrounding wall, creating a completely seamless look. A surface-mount door attaches to the wall face with a frame and trim, sitting slightly proud of the wall. Flush-mount installs are more architecturally convincing but require more precise rough opening preparation. Surface-mount is faster to install and works with most wall types.
Is it hard to install a hidden bookcase door?
Installation difficulty depends on your configuration. Murphy Door® panel kits are designed for experienced DIYers with basic carpentry skills and can typically be completed in one to two days. Fully assembled units ship pre-hung and factory-tested, so they install faster. White Glove Delivery (an optional add-on from $350) will bring the unit inside and place it in the room, but it does not include installation. For flush-mount or custom configurations, professional installation is strongly recommended to ensure proper alignment and concealment — Murphy Door offers it through a network of licensed contractors in select cities; call 888-458-5911 to check coverage and get a quote.
How much force does it take to open and close a Murphy Door?
Very little — a slight pull is all it takes. Despite weighing 80 to 100 lbs, the door is balanced by our patented hinge system so it swings open and closed with minimal effort. Most people are surprised by how effortless it feels in person.
What sizes do Murphy Door bookcase doors come in?
Murphy Door bookcase doors are available in widths from 24" to 84" to fit virtually any standard or custom doorway opening. Standard heights follow typical residential door heights. Custom sizes are also available for non-standard openings — contact our team for sizing guidance if your opening falls outside standard ranges.

The door and hardware is all of good quality material. Ready to assemble. The instructions were a little unclear and basic, I did have to do some backtracking. The link to the online instructions was broken so I ended up doing a YouTube search and trusting "what seemed intuitive ". Delivery was frustrating. Tracking ,after I was notified my order was on its way, just said in transit.I checked every morning and that's all I got until I get a call from the driver saying he was 15 minutes out. Luckily we are self employed and could break away, and the driver was accommodating, but for the delivery being 30% of the total cost I definitely expected more. All in, We would probably just buy the hardware next time and build the door ourselves.

Hi. Is the entire unit made of MDF in the cheapest option? MDF is known to pull apart at joints, screws often do not hold, and corners chip off easily. Is there a Poplar or pine option? Thanks
Our products are not built like typical big-box MDF furniture. While we do use engineered wood components in certain areas for stability and consistency, the structural integrity of our doors is built around a reinforced solid wood frame. This is what allows the door to function properly long-term, support weight, and avoid the common issues you mentioned like joint failure or hardware loosening. We specifically engineer our products to prevent the common MDF concerns: All load-bearing areas are reinforced and designed to hold hardware securely Joinery is engineered for long-term durability, not just assembly convenience Finishes and edge treatments are applied to reduce chipping and wear over time In terms of wood options: We do offer real wood finishes and upgrades depending on the model and configuration Some components can be upgraded to hardwoods like poplar or similar materials depending on the application If you're looking for a more traditional solid wood feel or have a specific use case, we can absolutely guide you into the best configuration for that. For additional peace of mind, all of our products are backed by our Limited Lifetime Warranty. At the end of the day, these are not mass-produced furniture pieces, they’re engineered systems designed to function as both a door and furniture, which requires a different build approach than standard cabinetry.
