Single Hidden Door FAQs
A single-panel hidden door is a full-size door built to look like a standard bookcase, panel, or wall element, completely concealing the door and any room behind it. Murphy Door's single-panel hidden doors use precision pivot hinges and adjustable shelving to create a functional bookcase that swings open smoothly, even when fully loaded with books or decor.
Murphy Door bookcase doors operate on a spring-loaded pivot hinge system. A hidden latch mechanism, typically located on a shelf edge, releases the door when pressed or pulled. The door swings outward on precision-balanced hinges, making opening and closing effortless even when shelves are fully loaded. The door closes flush with the surrounding wall for a seamless appearance.
Murphy Door's single hidden doors are available in standard door widths from 24 to 36 inches and heights from 80 to 96 inches, fitting most standard residential doorway openings. Custom sizing is available for non-standard openings. Each product listing includes exact rough-opening dimensions, and our team can help you select the right fit for your space.
Yes, Murphy Door's single-panel hidden doors are designed for DIY installation. Each kit includes all required hardware, pre-hung pivot hinges, and step-by-step printed instructions. Most homeowners with basic carpentry skills complete installation in a weekend. Murphy Door also offers professional installation through licensed contractors if you prefer a hands-off approach.
Murphy Door's single hidden bookcase doors start at $1,440 and range to $3,500+ for fully finished, painted, or stained units. Final price depends on door size, wood species, finish level, and whether you choose a DIY hardware kit or a complete finished door. Use the product configurator on each listing to price your exact configuration.

Before You Install: Finish Those Walls First
Surface Mount sits over a fully finished opening: drywall,
paint, and trim done, just like an existing doorway. If
you’re still mid-construction, finish those edges out
first, or the raw sheetrock and framing around the door will
stay visible once it’s mounted.
