There is a comfortable myth in the hidden-door world: that a door is only as good as whether it is “real wood” or “MDF.” It is a tidy story, and it is wrong. A hidden door is not a plank. It is a moving wall that hangs hundreds of pounds on a few hinges, swings every day, and has to stay perfectly flat and invisible for a lifetime. Building that is not a question of wood versus fiberboard. It is a question of putting the right material in the right place, and engineering the one place that matters most: the core.

First, about that phrase “real wood”

Be careful with it. In this industry “real wood” and “solid wood” are used loosely, and the most common thing hiding behind them is plywood. Plywood is not solid wood. It is an engineered panel, thin layers of veneer glued together, every bit as “engineered” as the fiberboard some makers warn you about. So when a company advertises “real wood,” ask two plain questions: is it solid lumber or plywood, and will you put the wood itself under warranty against warping, in writing?

Wood movement is real and unavoidable, which is why many makers who lean hardest on the “real wood” story will not stand behind that wood when it moves. The warranty is the tell.

What the wood words actually mean

The terminology is where buyers get misled, so here are the plain definitions:

  • Solid wood, or lumber: milled boards of a single species. Beautiful and strong, but it moves, warps, and cups with humidity.
  • Hardwood: the species, like oak, maple, cherry, or alder. It describes the tree, not the construction. Hardwood can be solid lumber or a paper-thin veneer.
  • Plywood: an engineered panel of thin wood veneers glued in layers. It is made of wood, but it is not solid lumber, and it can hide voids and delaminate.
  • Veneer: a paper-thin slice of wood glued onto a core. A veneered panel is real wood on the surface only.
  • MDF: medium-density fiberboard, real wood refined to fiber and bonded under heat and pressure into one uniform panel. Premium grades are dense and strong; commodity grades are not.
  • Particle board: coarse wood chips pressed with resin, the weakest engineered panel.
  • Melamine: a decorative plastic-look surface fused onto a core, usually particle board. It describes the skin, not the strength.

So “real wood” can honestly mean solid lumber, plywood, or a veneer over a panel, three very different things. Some makers who advertise “real wood” build the load-bearing body and shelves from cabinet-grade plywood and use solid hardwood only on the visible frame. Before you buy, ask which parts are solid lumber and which are plywood or veneer, and get it in writing. Is MDF “real wood” too? Follow the logic.

Here is the honest answer almost nobody in this business will give you. Plywood is real wood veneers glued together. MDF is real wood fibers glued together. Particle board is real wood chips glued together. All three start as a real tree, get broken down, and get bonded back together with adhesive. The main things that separate them are how finely the wood is broken down, the resin used, and how the fibers are oriented. So the moment a company calls its plywood “real wood,” by its own logic MDF is real wood too. It is simply real wood ground to a finer, more uniform fiber. That is the whole point: “real wood” tells a buyer almost nothing. Plywood, MDF, particle board, and solid lumber are all wood. The questions that matter are which one is used for which part, and whether the maker will show you the numbers.

We could play the word game. We choose not to.

A lot of companies in this category lean on the phrase “real wood” because the words are legally soft and do the selling for them. We could do the same. A Vaultwood Core is built from real wood, so we could stamp “real wood” on the box and let you assume the rest. We will not. We would rather tell you exactly what a Murphy Door® is made of, part by part, and hand you the standards to check it yourself, than win a sale on a word that hides more than it reveals.

So here is a fair test, and it works on any hidden-door company, including ours. Ask which parts are solid lumber, which are plywood, and which are veneer, and ask to see it in writing. Some makers bury that answer in an FAQ or the fine print. Some put it right on the label. You get to decide who you want to work with: the company that hides behind a definition, or the one that puts the truth in front of you.

Plywood: the panel that actually earns the warnings

Here is the irony. The failures people fear are far more at home in plywood than in a quality engineered core, and cabinetmakers know it. The consensus in the trade is blunt: plywood is not suitable for making doors because of its tendency to warp. The reasons are built into how it is made:

  • Delamination. As humidity cycles, the glued layers work against each other and the adhesive fatigues until the plies separate. It is the classic plywood failure, and it is not easily fixed.
  • Voids. Inner plies carry hidden gaps where knots fell out or the glue never bonded, present even in cabinet-grade sheets. They create weak spots and telegraph as uneven surfaces.
  • Humidity mismatch between layers. Each ply can respond to moisture a little differently, which builds internal stress and pulls the panel out of flat.
  • It will not stay flat. Sheets often arrive with a bow, and a panel that is not dead flat to begin with is nearly impossible to bring back. For a flush door cut to a precise reveal, that is disqualifying.

We know, because we tried it. Twice.

This is not theory for us. When Murphy Door® started, we built with plywood. It gave us hundreds of warranty problems, including a case with a big-box retail partner in California where humidity swings caused delamination and we had to take back nearly 200 units. Years later we went back and tried again, testing different plywoods to see if any had solved it. None could sit flat enough to guarantee the perfect, repeatable cuts a hidden door lives or dies by. So we stopped using it.

To be clear: if a customer demands plywood, we will build it, we just will not guarantee it for the purpose a hidden door is built for. Not because we do not want to, but because across hundreds of thousands of products we have learned exactly how it behaves. And this is not a cost decision. We own a hardwood mill; we know the price of every option. Vaultwood Core costs us more than solid hardwood, plywood, and commodity MDF in most material types. We did not choose it to save money. We chose it because it is the only material that does the job for a lifetime.

So what were they actually attacking?

Read any “avoid MDF” argument closely and it is always describing the cheapest fiberboard on the market, the bargain panel built down to a price. On that, we agree. Commodity MDF was never meant to carry a loaded bookcase for decades, and we do not use it. Vaultwood Core is a different animal: a engineered core, held to an exact minimum specification we set, and produced for us, to order, by more than one of the largest engineered-wood mills in North America, because only the best can consistently hit our numbers. It is built to a modulus of rupture (breaking strength) of 5,000 PSI, carried by a hinge and hardware system tested to 1,540 lbs, and every door holds well over 400 lbs of load beyond its own weight. Calling it “MDF” because they share a family tree is like calling a purpose-built race engine “a motor.” Same category, different universe.

The claims, corrected

“Screws wallow out of engineered wood.” Not out of a core built for it. Vaultwood Core holds hardware in its strong, uniform face, and the hinge and hardware system is tested to 1,540 lbs. Every door carries well over 400 lbs of load on top of its own weight, and sag is governed by that hardware system, not by the core. Solid wood, by contrast, splits at fasteners and loosens as it moves.

“Engineered wood creeps, real wood doesn’t.” Backwards. Solid wood shows a documented behavior called mechano-sorptive creep that gets worse as humidity cycles. A large solid slab under constant load is a textbook creep-and-warp candidate. A dense engineered core is far more resistant, because it has no continuous grain to cup or bow along.

“Real wood is more stable.” For a flat panel, the opposite is true. Wood cups and warps with humidity, which is why wide panels are glued from strips and fine doors are built frame-and-panel. A flush hidden door cannot move. That is the core’s job.

“Formaldehyde makes it toxic.” Composite wood sold in the US must meet TSCA Title VI, the same limits as California’s CARB Phase 2 (an MDF cap of 0.11 parts per million), among the strictest formaldehyde standards in the world. No-added-formaldehyde (NAF) engineered panels exist that emit essentially no more than natural wood. Solid wood is not automatically VOC-free either, once you count glue-ups and finishes.

Know what you are actually comparing

Here is the sleight of hand in most “avoid MDF” arguments: they treat “MDF,” “particle board,” and “melamine” as the same thing. They are not, and the gap between them is enormous.

  • Particle board. Wood chips and sawdust pressed with resin. The weakest engineered panel, the lowest screw hold, and the first to swell when it meets moisture.
  • Melamine. Not a material, a surface. A thin decorative layer fused onto a core, and that core is almost always the cheapest particle board. A glossy melamine face can hide the weakest panel in the building.
  • Big-box MDF. Fine wood fiber pressed to a price. A real step up from particle board, but built for a store shelf, not for a lifetime under load.
  • Plywood. Thin wood veneers glued in layers. Strong in-plane, but it hides voids and delaminates as the glue lines fatigue.
  • Solid hardwood. Milled lumber. Beautiful and strong along the grain, but it warps, cups, and splits at fasteners.
  • Vaultwood Core. A premium, purpose-built engineered fiber core, made for Murphy Door® to our exact minimum specification, resin-bonded to resist moisture and built for the load a hidden door lives under.

The variance is the whole story. Breaking strength runs from about 1,600 PSI for particle board to 5,000 PSI and beyond for Vaultwood Core, roughly three times stronger. Single-screw hold runs from about 180 lbs at the bottom to the top of the group. And the hinge and hardware system that carries the door is tested to 1,540 lbs, with every door rated to hold well over 400 lbs on top of its own weight. That spread is exactly what a competitor hides when they wave the word “MDF” at you. Lumping a melamine-wrapped particle board shelf in with a purpose-engineered core built to an exacting spec is like calling a scooter and a truck the same thing because both have wheels.

How Murphy Door® builds a door

Good engineering is not loyalty to one material. It is knowing exactly when and where to use each. Every Murphy Door® pairs top-grade solid hardwood with Vaultwood Core. The parts you see and touch, the face frames, most cabinet doors, and some trim, are solid, top-grade hardwood. Always. Never finger-jointed, never the low-grade show-wood used to shave cost. Every door also ships with a half-inch structural back panel as standard, twice the thickness of a standard quarter-inch back panel, with a three-quarter-inch upgrade available for the heaviest loads.
