For insurance reasons, freight companies will not allow drivers to back into any driveways, dirt roads or other out-of-the-ordinary lanes, paved or unpaved. If the delivery point is too far from the installation or storage area, you must make arrangements to meet the driver and transfer the material to another vehicle. Freight drivers will only transfer product from the trailer to the person accepting the shipment.

NOTE: Neither the freight carrier nor Murphy Door will be responsible for any missing or damaged material after the shipment is off-loaded from the freight carrier and the delivery receipt signed.

Each Murphy Bed is handmade in the USA using real wood veneers and solid hardwood components, delivering the natural wood beauty and craftsmanship that transforms your space, without sacrificing an inch of quality.

FAQ

What is a Murphy bed, and is it the same as a wall bed?

Yes — Murphy bed and wall bed are two names for the same thing: a bed that folds up vertically (or horizontally) into a cabinet when not in use, freeing the floor space for living. The name "Murphy bed" comes from William L. Murphy, who patented the design in the early 1900s, while "wall bed" is simply the modern descriptive term. Murphy Door elevates this concept by integrating our signature hidden-door craftsmanship, so your wall bed can disappear behind a full bookcase or panel door. Explore the possibilities in our Murphy bed collection or design your own in the Design Studio.

Are Murphy beds comfortable and safe to sleep in every night?

Murphy beds are genuinely comfortable for nightly use — the fold-down mechanism is engineered to hold the mattress flat and fully supported, exactly as a traditional bed frame does. Murphy Door's wall beds use heavy-duty steel piston hardware with safety stop mechanisms, so the bed cannot close on an occupant and holds its position reliably at every angle. Pair it with any quality mattress and the experience is indistinguishable from a conventional bed. Read what real owners say in our customer reviews.

What type of mattress works best with a Murphy bed?

A high-density foam or latex mattress between 10 and 12 inches thick is the ideal choice for a Murphy bed — these materials don't shift inside the cabinet, hold their shape beautifully, and fold easily without bottoming out the pistons. Memory foam is equally well suited; traditional innerspring or pocketed-coil mattresses can work but must be secured with the included retention straps to prevent sliding. Mattresses thicker than 12 inches may interfere with cabinet closure, so always confirm thickness compatibility with your specific model. See configuration details in the Murphy bed collection or ask our team via Design Studio.

Can I install a Murphy bed myself, or do I need a professional?

Murphy Door wall beds ship as complete pre-assembled panels with hardware pre-installed, designed for confident DIY installation in a weekend — no special tools beyond a drill and level are required. Each unit ships with detailed step-by-step instructions, and our installation guides cover every configuration. For large custom multi-cabinet builds or integrated hidden-door systems, we recommend engaging a local carpenter or installer for the final wall anchoring and finish work. Our support team is available to walk you through any step of the process.

What mattress works best in a Murphy bed?

Memory foam and gel foam mattresses are the best choice for Murphy beds — they are flexible enough to fold up smoothly without the spring-tension issues associated with innerspring coils. Murphy Door® recommends a mattress between 10 and 12 inches thick for optimal sleeping comfort and proper door closure. Brands like Casper, Nectar, Saatva, and Purple all have models that work well in horizontal Murphy bed configurations.

What sizes do Murphy beds come in?

Murphy Door wall beds are available in twin, full, queen, and king sizes, in both vertical (portrait) and horizontal (landscape) orientations — horizontal models are ideal for rooms with low ceilings or when you want a wider cabinet footprint. Queen vertical is the most popular configuration for guest rooms and studios; king horizontal suits primary bedrooms where ceiling height is limited. Custom dimensions are available for non-standard spaces. Explore every size and orientation in the Murphy bed collection or design your perfect fit in the Design Studio.
