FAQ
Can Murphy Door® hardware be used with a custom-built door or bookcase?
Yes. Murphy Door® hardware kits are designed for DIY builders converting a custom-built bookcase or cabinet into a functional hidden door. The kits provide all necessary hinge, pivot, and mounting hardware in the correct specifications for a bookcase door of the rated weight. Customers supply the door panel or bookcase; Murphy Door® provides the hardware system. Detailed installation documentation is available in the support center. For the best results, confirm your door dimensions and weight against the hardware kit's rated specifications before purchasing.
What is the weight rating of Murphy Door® hinge hardware?
Murphy Door®'s hinge and hardware system is tested to 1,540 lbs and carries up to 400 lbs of shelf load on doors up to 36 inches wide. Heavy-duty pivot hinge configurations can support additional loads for oversized or unusually tall doors. SOSS invisible hinges have lower weight ratings appropriate for unloaded slab doors and lightweight panel doors. Weight ratings for each hardware kit are specified on individual product pages — always select hardware rated above your estimated door weight to ensure long-term performance.
Can I use Murphy Door® hardware on a wall that is not standard drywall?
Murphy Door® hardware kits are designed for standard wood-framed drywall walls. For installations in plaster walls, tile-clad walls, or masonry, hardware selection and installation methods must be adapted. Masonry anchors replace standard screw fasteners; frame shimming may be required for non-standard wall thicknesses. Murphy Door® recommends consulting the installation documentation specific to your wall type before ordering, or contacting Murphy Door® support for a compatibility review.
Can I use Murphy Door hardware on my own custom-built door or bookcase?
Yes — Murphy Door's hardware kits are designed for DIY builders who want to convert an existing bookcase or a custom cabinet build into a functional hidden door. The kits include all hinges, pivot hardware, and mounting components needed for a complete installation on a door you supply. Detailed specs and weight ratings are listed on each product page in the hardware collection, and step-by-step guidance is available in the installation guides. If you have questions about compatibility with your specific build, contact our support team.

Works great.
The hinges come with no instructions. I contacted the manufacturer to get the measurements for the positioning. They didn’t help. Found a YouTube video for the measurements. Hinges work great now.

Hinges work great had a difficult time finding a plan that worked but once I dove in it was pretty fun figuring out how to put it all together.

Wish there were better instructions…
Hinges are sturdy and smooth but lack instructions/templates. Advice: measure before drilling. A 4-way laser level helps a lot.

High Quality Hinge
The hinges seem to be of very high quality, operating very smoothly with a very heavy self-made bookcase door of almost 100 lbs. As the previous review notes, the directions are rather poorly thought out, and at least one set still on their website does not match the hardware you actually get (the pin for the top hinge). I suggest that for self-made doors you create a template for the width and depth of the door, and make sure that clears the final trim as it opens and closes on your chosen pivot point--both top and bottom--and that the pivot points top and bottom are plumb. A bookcase in anything less than a 36" door makes for a very narrow opening.

Very smooth pivot hinge
A+
I was very amazed at the ease and functioning of the hinge. The only drawback is installation directions are pretty generic, a novice will struggle with the setback dimensions
I wish I could attach a picture.

Received quickly. Instructions could improve, but the price is fantastic.

Before You Install: Finish Those Walls First
Surface Mount sits over a fully finished opening: drywall,
paint, and trim done, just like an existing doorway. If
you’re still mid-construction, finish those edges out
first, or the raw sheetrock and framing around the door will
stay visible once it’s mounted.
