What is an electromagnetic lock and how does it work with a hidden door?
An electromagnetic (mag) lock uses electrical current to generate a magnetic field that bonds a steel armature plate on the door to the electromagnet on the frame — holding the door closed with force typically measured in hundreds to thousands of pounds of holding strength. When power is cut (via keypad, RFID, remote, or smart home command), the magnetic field collapses and the door releases. Murphy Door® integrates mag locks within door frames with no visible hardware on the bookcase face, maintaining full concealment.
How do you open a hidden door from the inside — is it safe if someone is locked in?
Safety is built into every Murphy Door design: all units include an interior release mechanism so the room can never become an inadvertent trap. Standard configurations feature an interior handle or touch-latch that opens the door from the concealed side without any special key or code. For safe rooms and panic rooms, we incorporate dedicated interior emergency release hardware that overrides any external locking system. Full safety details are covered in our installation guides, and our support team can specify the right release mechanism for your configuration.
Do Murphy Doors lock?
Yes; all of our Murphy Doors can be fitted with a hidden door locking system that is sold separately. Our systems include keypads, wireless key fobs, electromagnetic locks, biometric fingerprint locks, or a classic mechanical key lock. Any option you choose offers an added layer of security for the space or valuables hidden behind your Murphy Door.
Can I add a lock to my hidden door?
Yes. Murphy Door® hidden doors are compatible with a range of locking systems including deadbolts, magnetic (electromagnetic) locks, RFID keycard systems, biometric fingerprint readers, wireless keypads, and smart home integration. Lock options depend on door configuration and whether you need access from one or both sides.
